Physical Education

We are now back from the summer holidays and started the new term.

Reception will be focusing on developing gross motor skills through multi skills. This means they will be introduced to activities such as: running, hopping, jumping, balancing and catching. These activities will help the children develop coordination and motor ability. Also they will gain greater physical strength and prolonged endurance.

Types of movement the children will be introduced to:

Body management skills

These are skills such as balancing on one foot, side rolls, climbing and walking in a line.

Object control skills

These are skills such as underarm throw, over arm throw, catching, football dribble and kicking.

Locomotor skills

These are skills such as sprinting, skipping, hopping, galloping and jumping for height.

Also they will be introduced to fun games such as ‘traffic lights’. This is where the teacher will shout out the colours on a traffic light. Different colours will give a different meaning, e.g. green could be sprint, amber/yellow could be jogging/skipping and red will be stop/walk.

Another fun game for receptions is the ‘bean game’. This is where the teacher will shout out different types of beans for example ‘baked bean’. If this is shouted the children will stop their movement and drop to the floor and curl up in to a ball.
